Professional teeth whitening is the simplest and quickest treatment to make your smile brighter. In our Tirana clinics it is carried out under the doctor's supervision with professional grade whitening gels, far more effective and safer than over the counter products, and always preceded by a hygiene session that removes plaque and tartar and prepares the enamel for the treatment.

What is teeth whitening?

Whitening works with a hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide gel that penetrates the enamel and breaks down the molecules responsible for stains and yellowing. In the clinic the gel is activated by a cold light lamp that speeds up its action, so that in one or two sessions of about an hour several shades of lightening are achieved on the dental colour scale. The treatment only acts on natural teeth: crowns, veneers and fillings keep their colour and are assessed separately by the doctor.

When is it indicated?

Whitening is indicated for teeth yellowed or darkened by coffee, tea, red wine, smoking or simply by age, and for people who want a brighter smile before an important event or to complete an aesthetic treatment. It is not indicated during pregnancy, with untreated decay or inflamed gums and in very young patients. During the free consultation the doctor assesses whether whitening is the right choice or whether the tooth colour depends on causes that require other solutions, such as veneers.

How is the treatment carried out in our Tirana clinics?

The session starts with professional cleaning and with recording the starting shade. The gums are protected with a resin barrier, then the gel is applied to the teeth and activated with the lamp in cycles of fifteen or twenty minutes, repeated two or three times. At the end the doctor applies a desensitising fluoride gel and records the shade obtained. Over the following days a white diet is recommended, avoiding staining food and drinks, to stabilise the result.

How long does it take?

The treatment is completed in one or two sessions during the same stay and is often combined with other care, for example after a hygiene session, before a crown on the front teeth or at the end of orthodontic treatment. The result lasts one to three years depending on habits, and can be maintained with short home touch ups using custom trays supplied by the clinic.

Is it safe for the enamel?

Yes, when performed by medical staff with professional products and correct concentrations whitening does not damage the enamel. Slight sensitivity to cold in the first days is normal and goes away on its own. The doctor's supervision makes it possible to choose the concentration and timing best suited to your teeth and to avoid the typical mistakes of do it yourself treatments.

How do you keep the result?

Good daily hygiene, a professional cleaning every six to twelve months and moderation with coffee, tea, wine and smoking keep your smile bright for a long time. The clinic can provide custom trays and a low concentration gel for periodic touch ups at home, always following the doctor's instructions.
