Root canal treatment, also called endodontic treatment, is the therapy that saves a tooth with inflamed or infected pulp, avoiding extraction. What is root canal treatment?

Inside every tooth lies the pulp, a tissue made of nerves and blood vessels that runs through the root canals. When deep decay, a fracture or trauma reaches the pulp, it becomes inflamed and then infected, causing intense pain and, if untreated, an abscess. Root canal treatment removes the diseased pulp, cleans and disinfects the canals down to the tip of the root and seals them with a biocompatible material, so that the tooth can stay in the mouth healthy and functional for many years.

When is it indicated?

Root canal treatment is indicated in cases of spontaneous or persistent pain with heat, deep decay reaching the pulp, abscesses or fistulas on the gum, trauma that damaged the nerve and teeth that need to be covered with a crown when the pulp is already compromised. How is the treatment carried out in our Tirana clinics?

After local anaesthesia the tooth is isolated with a rubber dam, a barrier that protects from saliva and guarantees a sterile environment. The doctor opens a small cavity, locates the canals, measures them electronically and shapes them with nickel titanium mechanical instruments, irrigating with disinfecting solutions. The canals are finally filled with gutta percha and sealing cement and the tooth is rebuilt. If the tooth is very weakened, the doctor recommends a zirconia crown to protect it from fractures, which can be made during the same stay.

How long does it take?

Root canal treatment requires one or two sessions of about an hour, depending on the number of canals and the presence of infection. The whole treatment, including a crown if needed, fits into a stay of four to six days in Tirana. Over the following days slight sensitivity when chewing may remain and disappears on its own.

Does it hurt?

No. With local anaesthesia the treatment is painless, and it actually removes the pain caused by the inflamed pulp. Modern techniques, magnification and mechanical instruments make the treatment more precise and faster than in the past. How long does a root treated tooth last?
