Zirconia Crown

A zirconia crown is a complete covering that protects a weakened, root treated, fractured or heavily restored tooth, giving it back shape, strength and a natural colour. It is also the most used crown on single implants. What is a zirconia crown?

Zirconia, or zirconium oxide, is a very high strength ceramic, free of metal, biocompatible and available in different translucencies. The crown can be monolithic, milled from a single block, ideal for molars subjected to heavy chewing forces, or layered with aesthetic ceramic for the front teeth, where the translucency of enamel matters more. In both cases the crown is cemented onto the prepared tooth or screwed onto the implant, and it has none of the grey margin of old metal ceramic crowns.

When is it indicated?

A zirconia crown is indicated for fractured teeth or teeth with large fillings that can no longer be rebuilt conservatively, for root treated teeth that must be protected from the risk of fracture, for very dark or malformed teeth and as the final restoration on implants. It is also suitable for people with metal allergies. During the free consultation, with radiographs and photos, the doctor assesses whether a crown is necessary or whether a more conservative solution such as an inlay or a veneer is possible.

How is the treatment carried out in our Tirana clinics?

In the first session the tooth is prepared under local anaesthesia, removing the minimum amount of tissue needed, and a digital impression is taken with the intraoral scanner, without traditional impression pastes. The doctor chooses the shade with you by comparing it with the neighbouring teeth and fits a provisional crown. The laboratory designs and mills the zirconia crown, characterises and polishes it. At the delivery session the doctor checks the fit, the contacts with the neighbouring teeth and the bite, then cements the crown permanently.

How long is the stay?

A stay of four to six days in Tirana is normally enough for preparation, trial fitting and cementation, thanks to the own laboratory. If the tooth first needs a root canal or a core build up, these are done during the same stay. For crowns on implants delivery takes place during the second trip, after osseointegration.
