Single Implant

A single dental implant is the most modern and conservative way to replace one missing tooth. What is a single dental implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium screw placed in the bone in the position of the lost root. Titanium is a biocompatible material that the bone recognises as its own and grows around within a few months, a process called osseointegration. An abutment is then screwed onto the implant and, on top of it, a zirconia or ceramic crown made to measure in our laboratory. Unlike a traditional bridge, a single implant does not require the neighbouring teeth to be ground down, so they remain intact.

When is it indicated?

A single implant is indicated when one tooth is missing, for example after an extraction, a fracture, deep decay that can no longer be treated or advanced gum disease. It is also indicated in cases of agenesis, when a tooth never developed. The main requirement is enough bone in height and width. If there is not enough, the surgeon assesses during the consultation a bone graft or a sinus lift, which can be done before or together with the implant placement. The gums must be healthy too: if gum disease is present, it is treated first.

How is the treatment carried out in our Tirana clinics?

Everything starts with the free consultation, by video call or at the clinic, during which the doctor examines the panoramic radiograph and the photos of your mouth and explains whether an implant is the right choice. On your arrival in Tirana a cone beam CT scan is taken, which shows in three dimensions the exact amount of bone and the position of nerves and sinuses. Based on the scan the surgeon plans the ideal implant position on the computer and prepares a surgical guide for guided surgery. The procedure usually takes less than an hour, under local anaesthesia, and is almost always painless. Mild swelling may appear over the following days and is controlled with the medication the doctor prescribes.

How long does it take and how many trips are needed?

The implant needs three to six months to integrate with the bone. The journey therefore normally includes two short stays in Tirana: during the first the implant is placed and, if needed, an aesthetic provisional is fitted; during the second a digital impression is taken with the intraoral scanner and the final zirconia crown is delivered. Between the two trips the doctor follows you remotely by video call and stays reachable on WhatsApp. In selected cases, when the bone quality is excellent, a provisional crown can be fitted on the same day as the surgery.

What advantages does it offer over the alternatives?

Compared with a fixed bridge, an implant preserves the neighbouring teeth and keeps the bone stimulated, which would otherwise tend to shrink. Compared with a removable denture, it offers full chewing, no discomfort on the palate and a lifespan that, with good hygiene and periodic checkups, can exceed twenty years. What should you do after the surgery?

In the first hours it is best to avoid hot food and physical effort; from the next day you return to normal life with a soft diet for a few days. For smokers, reducing or stopping smoking during the healing weeks noticeably improves the result.
