Professional dental hygiene is the cleaning session carried out at the clinic that removes plaque and tartar where the toothbrush cannot reach, polishes the teeth and prevents decay and gum disease. It is the starting point of every treatment journey in our Tirana clinics and is included in every treatment stay, because a clean, healthy mouth is the necessary condition for the success of implants, prosthetics and aesthetic care.

What is professional hygiene?

It is a treatment performed by a hygienist or a doctor with specific instruments: the ultrasonic scaler, which breaks up and detaches tartar with high frequency vibrations and a water jet; air flow, a jet of very fine powder and water that removes coffee, tea and smoking stains; hand curettes for the most delicate areas; and finally polishing pastes that make the surface smooth and less prone to new build up. The session ends with the application of fluoride or desensitising products.

When is it indicated?

Professional hygiene is recommended for everyone every six to twelve months, and more often for people with periodontitis, implants or prosthetics, bleeding gums or smokers. It is also essential before whitening, prosthetics, veneers and implant surgery. During the free consultation the doctor establishes the frequency best suited to your case.

How is the session carried out in our Tirana clinics?

The session starts with a check of the condition of teeth and gums and, if necessary, with periodontal probing. Ultrasonic scaling, air flow cleaning, hand finishing, polishing and fluoride treatment follow. The hygienist shows you the brushing techniques and the use of floss and interdental brushes suited to your mouth, in your language, and recommends the most useful products. The whole session lasts about an hour and is generally painless; for more sensitive patients an anaesthetic gel can be used.

Plaque and tartar host bacteria that inflame the gums and can compromise healing after implant surgery, the bonding of crowns and veneers and the result of whitening. Brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes, preferably with an electric toothbrush, use floss or interdental brushes every evening, limit sugar and smoking and repeat professional hygiene at the frequency indicated by the doctor. Between stays you can have maintenance sessions with a hygienist at home, on the instructions of our doctor who remains your point of contact.
