Wisdom tooth extraction is an oral surgery procedure that removes an impacted, partially erupted or compromised third molar responsible for pain, recurrent infections or damage to neighbouring teeth. What are wisdom teeth and why are they removed?

Wisdom teeth are the last molars, which appear between the ages of seventeen and twenty five. In many people there is not enough room for them to erupt correctly and they remain trapped in the bone or gum, or grow tilted and push against the neighbouring tooth. In these conditions they can cause gum inflammation called pericoronitis, decay that is hard to treat, cysts, pain and crowding of the front teeth. When the tooth causes problems or is likely to, the safest solution is to remove it.

When is extraction indicated?

Extraction is indicated in cases of repeated infections, pain, untreatable decay of the wisdom tooth or of the second molar, cysts or lesions visible on the radiograph, difficulty with hygiene and on the orthodontist's advice before or after orthodontic treatment. A fully impacted wisdom tooth with no symptoms can instead be kept under observation. During the free consultation, with a panoramic radiograph and if necessary a CT scan, the surgeon assesses the position of the tooth and its closeness to the alveolar nerve.

How is the procedure carried out in our Tirana clinics?

After the radiographic assessment the surgeon gives local anaesthesia and, if the tooth is impacted, opens a small gum flap and removes the bone needed to free it; the tooth may be divided into sections to extract it with less trauma. The wound is then closed with resorbable stitches. The procedure usually takes between twenty and forty minutes. You receive precise instructions in your language on eating, hygiene and the medication to take over the following days.

How long is recovery and how many days are needed in Tirana?

Swelling and discomfort peak in the first forty eight hours and gradually decrease over a week. A stay of three to five days in Tirana is enough for the procedure and the first checkup; resorbable stitches do not need removing and the following checkup can take place by video call. The extraction is often combined with other treatments during the same stay, for example professional cleaning or the preparation for an implant.
