Dental tourism in Albania has grown a great deal in recent years and Tirana has become one of the destinations most chosen by patients from Italy and the rest of Europe who need implants, prosthetics, veneers or full rehabilitations. The reasons are simple: modern clinics, European trained doctors who speak Italian and English, a direct flight of little more than an hour from Italy and costs noticeably lower than in Western Europe for the same materials and technology. This guide explains, step by step, how the journey works in our Tirana clinics, without selling anything and without promising what cannot be promised before an examination.
What is dental tourism and why Albania?
Dental tourism is the choice to receive treatment in another country, combining the care with a short trip. Albania is particularly suitable for patients from Italy because of its geographic closeness, the language, spoken by most doctors and staff, and a dental culture that was formed in European universities. Tirana, the capital, concentrates the best equipped clinics in the country and is connected every day by direct flights with Rome, Milan, Bologna, Bari, Venice and other cities, as well as with the main European hubs. Those who prefer the ferry can sail from Bari, Brindisi or Ancona to Durrës, forty minutes from the capital.
Who are the doctors who treat you?
The quality of a treatment depends first of all on who performs it. The doctors of our clinics studied and specialised abroad, mainly at European universities and centres, and attend continuous training courses in implantology, prosthetics, orthodontics and aesthetics. Most of them speak Italian as well as English, so the relationship with the patient does not go through an interpreter or a sales operator. Our whole team works inside the clinics: doctors, coordinators and assistants are the same people you will meet at the consultation, in the chair and after you return home.
How does the free consultation work?
Every journey starts with a free, no obligation consultation. It is given by a dental doctor, surgeon and implantologist, by video call or directly at the clinic in Tirana. Before the call you can send us a recent panoramic radiograph and a few photos of your mouth on WhatsApp or through the website form. During the consultation the doctor examines the material, listens to your expectations and explains the possible solutions, with their pros and cons, the timing and the number of trips needed. It is a proper examination, not a sales call, and at the end you decide calmly whether and how to proceed.
Why should nobody give you a price before examining you?
Many websites publish price lists with prices starting from a certain figure and percentages of savings. The problem is that a price given without seeing the patient's mouth is not a quote, it is a promise. An implant may require a bone graft or a sinus lift, a crown may hide a root canal, a full rehabilitation may change according to the quality of the bone. Whoever promises a blind price will have to revise it in the chair, once you have already travelled. That is why in our clinics the cost of the treatment is communicated by the doctor only after the consultation, in writing and item by item, and from that moment it does not change. The saving compared with Italy or Western Europe remains real, but it comes from a concrete treatment plan and not from an advertising figure.
How is the trip organised?
If you decide to go ahead, we choose the dates together according to the treatment plan. We suggest hotels a few minutes from the clinic, in quiet and well served areas, and we organise transfers from the airport or the port and between hotel and clinic. Many patients are accompanied by a family member or a friend and the stay is organised for both. You only need a valid identity document or passport, the radiographs already shown at the consultation and the list of the medicines you take.
How many trips are needed and how long do they last?
It depends on the treatment. Hygiene, fillings, root canals, crowns, bridges, veneers and whitening are completed in a single stay of a few days, thanks to the own laboratory that makes the prosthetics quickly. Single implants and All-on-4 and All-on-6 rehabilitations normally require two stays a few months apart, to respect the healing time of the bone; during the first trip the implants are placed and a fixed provisional prosthesis delivered, during the second the final zirconia prosthesis. Orthodontics, especially with clear aligners, involves a few short trips and remote checkups by video call.
What happens at the clinic on the first day?
On your arrival we pick you up at the airport and take you to your hotel. On the first day at the clinic the doctor repeats the examination in person, takes the cone beam CT scan and the three dimensional intraoral scan, confirms the treatment plan agreed remotely and presents the schedule of appointments. Only then does the treatment begin. The clinics work with guided implant surgery, internationally recognised implant brands, zirconia prosthetics made in the own laboratory and European sterilisation protocols. All instructions before and after every procedure are given in your language.
What can you do in Tirana between appointments?
Tirana is a lively, safe capital that is easy to explore on foot. The centre with Skanderbeg Square, the Blloku district with its cafés and restaurants, Bunk'Art, the Dajti cable car for a view over the city and the new market are the places our patients appreciate most. After surgery the doctor will advise one or two days of rest, but for the rest of the stay you have time to discover the city and, if the schedule allows, the coast an hour and a half away by road.
What happens after you return home?
Our support does not end at the airport. The doctor who treated you remains reachable on WhatsApp and by video call for any question, intermediate checkups are done remotely and, for multi stage treatments, the second stay is planned together before you leave. Every treatment is covered by a written warranty delivered with the treatment plan, stating its duration and conditions. Maintenance hygiene sessions can also be done at home, on the instructions of our doctor.
How do you recognise a serious service?
Always ask who will carry out the consultation, a doctor or a sales operator; where the clinic is physically located and who will welcome you; whether the price you are given was decided after an examination; which implant brand is used and which written warranty you will receive; who will answer you if you have a problem after returning. These are the questions we ask ourselves about every patient who contacts us, and the answers we give are the same ones you read in this guide. If you would like to discuss it with one of our doctors, the consultation is free and without obligation.
